Bumper crowds and top-quality livestock on display at FBD National Livestock Show, Tullamore 2023.

Ring 1 bustled with crowds throughout the day enjoying tremendous Holstein Friesian classes.

Bawnmore Pepper Almeric exhibited by John O’ Connor wins Supreme Senior Holstein Friesian Champion, FBD National Livestock Show 2023. Remarkably, she has now repeated the same top National achievement and success as her mother Clongowes Sid Almeric 2 who won Tullamore National Livestock Show Champion in 2016 for owners John & Bryan O’ Connor who farm together near Kanturk in Co. Cork.

Judge of the Holstein Friesian classes was Mr. Lynden Bustard. Originally from Ontario, Canada Lynden works as a Classifier with Holstein UK. Lynden is a member of the National UK Judge’s panel and he has judged extensively Internationally. He recently celebrated a landmark of twenty-five years employment with Holstein UK as a member of the Classification service team.

Dermot McCarthy from Kilmallock, Co. Limerick was judge of the YMA (Young Members Association). Showmanship League classes. Dermot won Champion YMA Handler at the National YMA Finals in 2009. Dermot was previously selected to represent YMA Internationally, competing successfully at the very highest level. He exhibited the Junior Champion at Tullamore National Livestock Show in 2014.

Cork Champion:

Cork based breeder John O’ Connor won the Senior Champion with his second calved cow Bawnmore Pepper Almeric. She Classified VG88, as a 2-Year-Old and recorded 9,686 kgs milk, 688 kgs milk solids (305 d) in her first lactation. Calved again in February, she is now six months into her second lactation. She also won best udder of show. She won Senior Champion & All Ireland Junior Cow, Charleville Show in June.

Hallow Atwood Carmen EX94 2E exhibited by Hallow Holsteins won Reserve Champion. She also won 1^st & best udder Senior Cow in milk. She is a 6^th generation EX (Excellent) Cow and is a grand daughter of Ballyboy Juror Carmen EX95 2E. She has already recorded 10,990 kgs milk, 878 kgs milk solids seven months into her fourth lactation.

Hallow Sol Twizzle EX92 exhibited by Hallow Holsteins won Honourable Mention and was 2^nd Senior Cow. She is bred from seven generations of VG/EX Dams. She has enjoyed a successful 2023 so far on the show circuit having won Reserve Champion & 1^st Senior Cow in milk, Emerald Expo. In three lactations to date she has recorded over 34,750 kgs milk, 2,772 kgs milk solids, 4.35 % Fat, 3.63 % Protein.

Reary Norah 275 EX92 3E exhibited by Kevin Flynn won the highest EBI senior award. Bred from the Norah family and backed by three generations of VG/EX Dams she is currently in her sixth lactation. She has a lifetime yield to date of 63,963 kgs milk, 4,621 kgs milk solids.

The Super €2,500 Heifer in milk class was brim-full with quality. Nine top quality heifers competed in this renowned National class. Jones Crushtime Patricia exhibited by Jones, Whittaker & Conroy was tapped forward in 1^st place. This achievement strengthens her list of successes having won Champion at Emerald Expo earlier in the year. Calved in since mid-February, she is Classified VG 88 2-Year-Old and is projected to yield 9,200 kgs milk, 608 kgs milk solids in her first lactation. She is bred from eight generations of VG/EX Dams. Jones Lambda exhibited by Gary & Isobel Jones won 2^nd place & best udder. Cherryblossom Unix Sue exhibited by Liam Murphy, Evergreen herd won 3^rd place.

The National Livestock Show Confined classes for breeders in counties Offaly, Laois and Westmeath were supported strongly once again.

Repeat Championship success for Mother & Daughter

Brothers John & Bryan O’ Connor farm together across two holdings located close together. Bawnmore is the prefix of the original O’Connor herd with the milking herd now housed on John’s newly developed farm. With a sharp eye for quality stock and for spotting potential, the brothers purchased the Dam of the Champion; Clongowes Sid Almeric as a nine-month-old heifer calf at the dispersal sale of the Clongowes herd, Clane, Co. Kildare in 2013. She is still going strong in the herd, yielding impressively approaching her fourteenth birthday. She has a lifetime yield to date of 70,759 kgs milk, 5,328 kgs milk solids. Breeders are constantly striving to breed and develop top quality breeding from a base of strong cow families and this mother and daughter duo are prime examples with a mirror image of achievements and credentials, attained seven years apart.

Tullamore National Livestock Show goes from strength to strength with a move to a new venue in 2024.

Crowds estimated in excess of 55,000 flocked to the Butterfield Estate, Tullamore in Co. Offaly to enjoy the National Livestock Show on Sunday August 13^th. The weather was very pleasant with a mostly sunny day overall bar two light showers in the early afternoon. The large crowds in attendance and the obvious huge popularity of the show in having a Nationwide appeal is a major credit to the members of organising committee who work together as a team to great effect in a voluntary capacity. Martina Neville does sterling work as Chairperson of the Dairy section and her team of helpers including the Neville and Finlay families combine to ensure that a successful and enjoyable day is had by exhibitors and spectators.

The official opening of the show was performed by Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue TD. The number of trade stands on display totalled over seven hundred. A designated “Sustainable Livestock Village” was a new initiative and attraction on display this year with a theme of helping to provide practical guidance and support to help farmers identify actions that can boost the environmental and financial performance of farms.

Tullamore National Livestock Show will move to a new venue located in near proximity next year.
