Hansberry Stockjudging Evening (Windmore Herd)
On Friday evening 21st June all roads led to Menlough for a very enjoyable evening of stockjudging at the Windmore Herd of John and Maura Hansberry.  I think that all attendees enjoyed judging the 18 cows put up for us to judge. Our master judge for the evening was Mike Laffan from the Limerick/Clare club and did an excellent job putting us through our paces. Thanks to the other members of the Limerick/Clare club that travelled to participate also. Mike gave his reasons in the field and then it was back to the yard for the final results. The winners were as follows:
U12 section: 1st Lenna Freeney 2nd James Cahill 3rd  Ronan Screene
U18 section: 1st Andy Gildea 2nd Aoibheann Screene 3rd  Stephen Laffey
U26 section: 1st Stephen O’Neill 2nd Kane Boal 3rd  Colm Hansberry
Senior section: 1st Teresa Roche 2nd Brian Tarpey 3rd  John Coppinger

After prizegiving, John took the microphone and gave a good breakdown of the farm and background to the breeding to the herd and kg’s of milk solids supplied in the current year.

The Hansberry farm was a credit to them on the evening with sheds spotless, well maintained roadways, clipped hedges and obviously doing a good job on grassland management with lush green grass in abundance.

It must also be mentioned that we got a great spread of food and tea before and after the judging. Thanks very much to the large crowd that attended and our sponsors Grennans Feeds. Thanks to our judge Mike Laffan for overseeing the proceedings and thanks especially to the Hansberry family for preparing their yard and animals for the event. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with a very relaxed atmosphere in which to judge good cows.

Stockjudging at IHFA Open Day hosted by Radney herd
On 27th June our freshly qualified teams of various ages made their way to Cork to the O’Keeffe farm to compete in the Stockjudging and Open Day. And compete they did! The U-18 team of Stephen Laffey, Aoibheann Screene and Sarah Grady came 2nd, with Sarah going on to win the highest individual score. Donal Coppinger was runner up in the U-23 Macra section and Michael Healy jointly won the highest individual score in the U-26 section. Ye done the club proud guys. Well done to everyone.

National Dairy Show Milstreet
The wagons rolled again in mid October with several members exhibiting in Milstreet. Megan Boal competed in the showmanship Friday evening and Megan came in fourth. Well done Megan. Well done to James Cahill who also competed in the novice handler class.

On Saturday morning, first into the ring was James Cahill in Class 5 with his calf “Sprucegrove Chief Harmonica”. Fair play to James who came 1st in what was a big class with 20+ calves competing.
Next into the ring in Class 8 was Kane Boal with his calf “Sprucegrove Awesome Bar” and Megan Boal with “Elitehaven Chief Noel”. Kindly handled by Megan for the Cahill family. Congratulations to both for finishing 3ed and 4th respectively.

Class 9 saw Michael Freeneys heifer “Mirah Doorman Martina” take 2nd, who looked well on the day.
Class 14 saw James Cahill steer his Jersey heifer in milk “Tonemace Valentino Frittillary 2”  into 3rd place.
Class 15 saw Carnmore man Louis Carr in the ring with his dad Padraig’s cow “Palmrock Nancy 142”. She went on to win this class and into the Confined Championship she went. To much delight from the western onlookers Nancy was tapped out as Confined Champion for Padraig and Louis. Well deserved to a man that has shown cattle in many arenas over the years.
Class 16 saw the Cahill families Jersey cow “Ribblesdale Vanhalem Frittilary” take 3rd.
Class 17 saw Michael Freeneys “Mirah Goldie Pamala stand 4th in a class which contained the eventual Grand Champion.
This completed the Galway placings for Milstreet ’19. A memorable show for the club. Thanks to all the team who prepared, helped and put the final touches on our cattle. Special word of thanks to Rory Timlin for fitting our team to a tee and has done all year. Congratulations must go to Rory aswell, and the Foody family, whose cow “Des Grands Trix Harmonica” had a class win and went on to be eventual Honourable Mention Grand Champion.  Congrats to the Foody family who also won the 4 year old class and Best Udder with “Sprucegrove Apples Peggy”. She also went on to win Exhibitor Bred Honourable Mention.

Club visit to Kylemore Cheese
On the 21st of September the club called to the Roche farm in Abbey Loughrea to witness Teresa Roche’s cheese making facility at the home of the Kilmora herd.

Teresa gave us the tour of the facility starting with the milking parlour/ dairy and finishing in the cheese making facility and store room. It really is a credit to her and takes no small amount of skill, knowledge, timing and hard work to produce this top quality end product. The club enjoyed great hospitality on the day and thanks also to Bertie for bringing us through the herd of cows to discuss their background and breeding. It was great to see a family run unit working so well. The club wishes every success to Teresa and the Roche family.

Calf Housing Visit
On the same day, the club called to the Callinan farm near Loughrea to view a new calf facility which Kevin has built recently. Thanks very much to Kevin for relaying all costs involved and allowing to view this modern facility. It is a credit to him and extremely well finished.

Finally….
On a final note for 2019, thanks to all who threw the shoulder behind the wheel to organize events, made tea and prepared grub, attended meetings and did everything they could to make it an enjoyable year for the club.
Thanks to all our sponsors without whose contributions to the club our events would not be possible.

Wishing ye all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous, safe and above all healthy 2020.
Tommy Cahill
