Tullamore Show took place on the 250 acre Butterfield Estate, Blue Ball, on Sunday 11th August. Revived in 1991 it is now firmly established as the country’s largest agricultural show.This is the 28th National Livestock Show and is sponsored by FBD. The show is a marvellous spectacle and great thanks has to go to all the organizers and committees especially when you consider it is a voluntary effort. Over 600 volunteers and 30 committees are involved.
There was a generous prize fund of €175K to be won across dairy, pedigree cattle, commercial cattle and sheep. As well as being a livestock show a wide variety of other competitions and displays took place including Macra farm skills, forestry, vintage machinery, arts and crafts, artisan foods, farm inventions and much more including 750 trade stands.In the dairy section IHFA sponsored the Young Showmanship Challenge Intermediate and Senior classes as well as the Junior Holstein Championship.
Emma Behan of the Bonaghmore Herd, Rathdangan, Co Kildare, judged the Showmanship Challenge. Emma has come through the ranks of YMA having many accolades to her name including Champion Handler at the National YMA Handling & Calf Show and EYBS.This competition is going from strength to strength with 34 young handlers competing in the National Showmanship Challenge. The numbers are increasing year on year such is the interest.

FBD National Livestock Show Young Showmanship Challenge – 12 years and under
Andy Cope of the Huddlesford Herd, UK was the Holstein Friesian judge on the day. Andy milks 300 pedigree registered Holstein Friesian cows on his home farm in Staffordshire. He is an excellent showman and judge, having come through the ranks of HYB in the UK with a long lineage in breeding pedigree Holstein Friesian. He has judged in Spain, RUAS Balmoral, Hungarian National Show, Three Counties Show and bred an All Britain 4 year old.The show started with the Young Showmanship Challenge followed by the Confined Classes for Laois, Offaly and Westmeath breeders. These classes were well supported.
There was a great crowd around the ring all day. It was a marvellous spectacle with exceptional strong classes of cows and heifers, with every cow being worthy of first place. The judge commented that in making his final choice it was down to the strength of dairy quality in his leading cow with an exceptional udder.He tapped out Des Grands Trix Harmonica as his Champion to great applause.Congratulations to Rory Timlin and Aidan & Seamus Foody, joint owners of the Champion cow. She also took Best Udder of the ShowReserve went to Hallow Atwood Grace owned by Philip & Linda Jones, Co.Wexford. She was second in her class to the overall champion.Honourable Mention went to Bryan O’Connor, Kanturk, Co. Cork with Bowberhill Mogul Melody.Junior Champion was won by Hallow Sol Twizzle owned by Philip & Linda Jones, Co.Wexford.
