Emerald Expo 2014 Champion reclaims title at 2015 event
An extremely high standard of dairy stock was seen at Emerald Expo 2015, which took place at the Punchestown Event Centre in Co. Kildare on Saturday last, 11th April. Emerald Expo is a leading All-Ireland Dairy Event organised in association with the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA), with the support of Alltech Ireland, FBD and the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine. Spectators were treated to quality judging of top quality dairy stock by Swiss judge Marc Henri Guillaume.
The Alltech FBD Senior Cow Championship was won by John Barrett & sons’ exceptional cow, Laurelmore Duplex Impala. Reserve Champion was Philip Jones’s Hallow Atwood Twizzle. Philip also took Honourable Mention with Hallow Advent Twizzle 3.
John Barrett’s cow not only reclaimed the title of Champion Cow from 2014 but also won the Condon Engineering Best Udder of Show and the IHFA Exhibitor Bred Champion prize.
It was also a good day for Bill O’Keeffe, Churchclara, Co Kilkenny, taking top honour in the Irish Pure Friesian Championship sponsored by Dovea Genetics. Bill’s Senior cow, Blackisle Laura 68 won the Friesian Championship. Honourable mention also went to the O’ Keefe family herd for their heifer Churchclara Blackie Circus. Prominant Kilkenny Friesian breeder, Pat Cleary, Hugginstown, had Reserve Champion with his Senior Cow Blackisle Mabel 57. Bill O’ Keeffe went on to win the Emerald Expo Premier Exhibitor title, sponsored by ICMSA, later in the day.
Other winners on the day included Philip Jones, Gorey, Co Wexford, winning the Osmonds Premier Breeder competition. Philip Jones’s Hallow Atwood Twizzle was also the winner of the ABS Intermediate Championship. Reserve Champion was David and Kenneth Boyd’s Glaslough Miss Persia and an Honourable Mention for Paul Flanagan’s Tubbertoby Atwood Fran.
The event got underway in the morning, with the Junior heifer classes. The Volac Junior Championship was claimed by Kilkenny based, Liam and Sandra Murphy’s Evergreen Seven Lauran, Reserve went to Pat Smith’s Cahirmee Alex Paradise and the Honourable Mention for Mike Magan’s Bunacloy VB Doorman.
The YMA handling Championship, sponsored by Volac was awarded to Lauren O’Toole, Bagnelstown, Co Carlow. Stacey O’Connor, Bandon, Co Cork claimed the Reserve with the Honourable Mention for Kevin Smith, Doneraile, Co Cork.
The event was officially opened by IFA President, Eddie Downey and was followed by a very informative Farm Safety forum chaired by IFA’s National Dairy Committee Chairman, Sean O’Leary. Other contributors to the forum were John McNamara, Teagasc National Health & Safety specialist, Arthur Byrne, ESB Networks and Maura Canning, IFA.
CEO of the IHFA Charles Gallagher announced the start of celebrations to mark 50 years of IHFA. He stated “2015 marks IHFA Golden Jubilee, a milestone for the Association, since established in 1965. Many commemorative events are planned throughout the year, we hope all members will enjoy these events”.
