The YMA AGM was held on January 17th last. Guest speaker was President of Macra na Feirme, Kieran O’ Dowd. A native of Co. Sligo Mr. O’ Dowd was elected to the office in April last year. A qualified Barrister and Accountant, Mr O’ Dowd is the first non-farming President of Macra. Founded in 1944, the objective of Macra na Feirme is to address issues affecting rural young people and the next generation of farmers. There are 8,000 members in 31 regional areas throughout the country. In his presentation Mr. O’ Dowd spoke about the important role of active participation in youth organisations and societies for young farmers. He said that the benefit of involvement in organisations such as YMA and Macra was the development of leadership and teamwork skills. Young members also have the opportunity to embrace new technologies and efficiencies. He spoke about the current C.A.P. negotiations and the importance of incentive schemes for young farmers towards establishment. Mr. O’ Dowd also spoke about the role of Agricultural Science education at Secondary level and in Agricultural colleges.
Date set for Calf Show The IHFA YMA 2014 National Calf Show will take place on July 29th & 30th.
