Tullamore Show 2014

Probably the best show of Dairy cattle to date at Tullamore despite the showery weather!

Tullamore show took place at Butterfield Estate, Blueball on Sunday 10h August on 250 acres of show ground area. Revived in 1991 and now firmly established as the country’s largest Agricultural show. There was a generous €85K in prize funds to be won across Dairy, Pedigree cattle, commercial cattle and sheep. As well as being a livestock show a wide variety of other competitions and displays took place including Macra farm skills, forestry, vintage machinery, arts and crafts, artisan foods, farm inventions and much more including 650 trade stands.

There was a very large attendance despite the thundery showers

In the dairy section IHFA sponsored an In-Calf Pedigree Registered heifer to the “Heifer and Hogget” competition run in conjunction with the Irish Farmers Journal. This excellent quality in calf heifer was sourced from Seamus & Catherine Claffey’s pedigree “Nahad” herd in Co Westmeath.

Won by John Coakley, Maynooth, Co. Kildare

John is aged 14 years. He attends Maynooth Post Primary School and is about to begin Junior Cert Year. With parents John & Carol and brothers Thomas and Peter John helps to run the family “Oldcarton” Pedigree Registered dairy herd. John has a very keen interest in the farm. A new milking parlour was installed earlier this year, on many occasions John got up at 5.30am so as to ensure the cows were milked before the builders arrived for their daily work on the parlour! John was also instrumental in getting his Dad to purchase their own AI flask to ensure that there was a steady supply of their chosen AI bulls. He takes a big interest in the breeding policy of the herd, taking careful time to study the various catalogues to ensure the best possible matings.

They are members of the local Kildare Friesian Breeders Club. In the Club herd competition this year the herd won Best Mature Cow and Most Improved Herd in the Intermediate section.

Best wishes to John & the Coakley family with this new addition to their herd.

Paul Miller of “SHANAEL” Holsteins, UK was the judge for the day . Paul is an excellent show man and judge having come through the ranks of HYB in the UK with a long lineage in breeding pedigree Holstein Friesian. He previously judged the National Calf show when hosted in Tullamore.

He milks 340 HF cows in a family partnership with his brother Steve, his parents Mike and Shan. Indeed we have to thank his Dad Mike who judged the National Herds Competition this Summer.

The show started with confined classes to Laois/Offaly and Westmeath breeders.

The 2014 show was in the estimate of many top breeders the best show of Dairy cattle to date at Tullamore. Nine In-Milk cows graced the Senior cow class demonstrating the longevity of the Holstein Friesian breed.

It was a great spectacle as shows go with exceptional strong classes of cows and heifers, with every cow being worthy of first place. The judge commented “That in making his final choice it was down to the strength of dairy quality in his leading cow with an exceptional udder”.

Showmanship Challenge

Tullamore show introduced the National Livestock Show Young Showmanship Challenge in 2011. It has gone from strength to strength with two age classes; aged 16 years & under and aged 17 to 26 years competing. As part of YMA’s Showmanship League the handlers at Tullamore were aiming to pick up qualifying points towards the competition’s grand finale. Throughout the summer, local shows have hosted YMA’s Showmanship League, providing the young members with the opportunity to hone and fine tune their skills. An accumulation of 24 points is required for the Final. From Castleblaney to Clonakilty there have been YMA members participating in local shows, picking up points along the way.

There were 25 youngsters showing their skills in handling watched by very enthusiastic spectators, parents & family who were enthralled to see the tremendous ability of these young boys and girls. There were very favorable comments, some stating that it was the highlight of the show in many ways.
