Report from Ploughing 2012
In response to member requests IHFA stand at the Ploughing was a more up market promotion of the breed.
IHFA featured a new look IHFA Pavillion, 60 ft x 60ft, with professional designed entrances and signage. The cows were rearranged in a semi circle cubicle layout which promoted the cows to the best advantage.
The pavilion housed booths for Volac,Weatherbys and the Irish Equine Centre . They were very happy with this arrangement and it helped to hold people’s attention for a longer time.
The pavilion and general professionalism of the stand received very positive comments from members and visitors alike. Members who did not visit the ploughing on this occasion had heard about the IHFA Pavilion and commented to me whenever I met them. I also received text messages and emails of congratulations.
IHFA featured 7cows, 2 pure Friesian cows, 2medium size, well balanced, commercial type cows and three cows of exceptional breeder quality. All were a minimum VG standard. IHFA also featured a February born calf on the stand for YMA and the free draw. The cows were sourced locally and are typical for the Holstein Friesian breed.
The theme was that the “Holstein Friesian Breed has the genetic Variation and Diversity to suit all dairy farming systems”
The summary boards for the cows were as follows:
Averages Per Cow
EBI – €134
Fertility Index – €75
Protein % – 3.71%
Cow Families – 6 generations (ancestry)
Average Milk Value Per Lactation – €2516
One of the animals was a heifer in milk and we ran a free competition to judge her classification. As part of the competition one also had to guess the 3rd yield of a cow. This competition has proven to be a very worthwhile exercise in engaging with the general public and assessing the effectiveness of the ploughing as a Breed Promotion event.
Over 2,000 entered the draw. There were excellent prizes on offer, a heifer calf sponsored by IHFA, €1000 product sponsored by Volac, 50LD snips sponsored by Weatherbys and €200 voucher sponsored by Irish Equine Centre…..
There was a YMA booth on the stand. This was manned by the Slaney club members who also promoted their club to the general public. I wish to thank Kathleen Watson and all the Slaney club members for their help.
I wish to thank all breeders who loaned cows for the stand, Sean Murphy “Knoxstown”, John Joe Doyle”Kiltrea”, Denis Doran “Leudigan”, Pat and Seamus O Leary “ Coolnagree”,Francis Fitzgerald “Gortfadda” John &Michael O’ Connor “Ballykennedy” and Tony Jackson “Keadeeen” who supplied the calf.
My thanks to Greenvale who supplied the ration for the cows and calf.
I also wish to thank IHFA staff who helped at the stand for the three days and especially Richard Jones and John Kirby who looked after the cows.
