The IHFA AGM was held on the 4th May in Ferrycarrig Hotel Wexford where our own club member Kathleen Watson, who has served many years of her time as club secretary, was handed her chain of office for her new role as IHFA President. It is a great honour for her and the Slaney Club. In her role as President Kathleen has been busy during the year representing IHFA at many different functions around the country and most recently in Hungry, representing Ireland’s bid to host the EHRC Conference of 2021 on which they were successful.
Emerald Expo Show
Our club was well represented at the first show of the 2017 showing season by our members of Jim & Una Sinnott, John & Garry Hurley and Philip & Linda Jones who exhibited their animals at the Emerald Expo Show in April of this year. Congratulations went to the Hurley Family who claimed Junior Champion with Clonpaddin MPW Fame 2 and to Philip and Linda Jones on taking Overall Supreme Champion of the show with Hallow Attic Christina
The first of our club’s field evenings this year was hosted by our chairman of John Joe Doyle’s Kiltrea Herd. A great evening was had with some fine stock and lovely food afterwards. Many thanks to John Joe and Family again for hosting a great evening. On the night awards were presented to Sean Murphy who won a Diamond Award and to John Atkinson who was presented with a Gold Award. Congrats again to both.
Our second field evening was held at Noel Kehoe’s Cathu Herd. Once again everyone got to see a fine herd of stock and received excellent refreshments from the barbeque after a tough evening of stock judging. Many thanks to Noel and Family for another tremendous evening. On the night our prize winners of the stockjudging were announced and they are as follows:
u18: 1. Josh Sinnott 2. Jack Doyle 3. Gearoid Murphy

Also at Kehoe’s that evening Pat Hipwell was present to promote “GreenRibbon.ie” which aims to change people’s minds about mental health. A very worthy cause that is very prevalent in today’s society.
Club Calf Show & Barbeque
Our annual club calf show was held on a fine Saturday afternoon on the 24th of June at Clogh Parish Hall. It was kindly sponsored by World Wide Sires. Our judge on the day was Padraic Murphy of the Carlow/Kilkenny club who did a great job of separating the great quality of calves on show, which is never an easy job, and he also put our superb handlers through their paces.
Champion Calf honours went to Gary and Izzy Jones with Hallow Doorman Abrakazoo 2 and Champion Handler honours went to Louise Sinnott. Once again our thanks goes to Laura and Louise Sinnott our YMA Coordinators who did an excellent job putting together a great show. We had great turn out of calves and even better to see lots of new faces on the halters.
Our club barbeque was held this year in conjunction with our calf show and took place directly afterwards in the hall. We were all well fed with some tasty barbeque food and some delicious desserts. Our thanks goes to Ned and Valerie Copeland who organised the preparation and cooking of the barbeque and to all our members who provided a dessert on the day.
IHFA Open Day
It was great to see the IHFA Open Day return back to the Slaney Club this year, with Victor Jackson’s Crossnacole Herd as the host farm. There was great support from club members in helping Victor with farm and stock preparations for the day. Well Done to Victor on a tremendous day and an excellent sale of stock. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. At the Open Day the results of the National Herds Competition were announced with some club members receiving awards. They were:

Our team of handlers who represented us were: Kate Jones, Ellen Jordan, Brian Hurley, Josh Sinnott, Mark Hurley, Sinead Byrne and Louise Sinnott, who all did a fantastic job in their classes. Kate Jones took 3rd prize in the Novice u10 handler. Mark Hurley was 1st place in the Intermediate Handler and Louise Sinnott placing 4th in the Mature Handler. On August Bank Holiday Slaney Club members enjoyed another great day out at Tinahely show. As always everyone was provided with lovely tea and sandwiches in the club caravan. Hallow Atwood Twizzle won the 2yr old Heifer in milk class and Bordermist Sanchez Fran took home Overall Champion of the show and Hurley Family taking Reserve Champion. Well done to all.

Dinner Dance & Herd’s Competition
This year our Herd’s Competition was held in June and was kindly sponsored by Glanbia. Our Judge was Eddie Barrett, who along with his wife Theresa joined us at our annual Dinner Dance, which took place in The Riverbank Hotel Wexford, to present the prize winners with their awards. Many congrats to all who received prizes on the night and thanks to Eddie for doing a fantastic job.
Once again, another tremendous year of events and results for the Slaney Club. Well done to all members who took part in various events or shows throughout the year and to all those who were successful. We look forward to another prosperous year in 2018.
