Winter 2016 – Club Notes

Club Outing
The clubs first outing was to the farm of John & Mary Coppingers family farm in Cormacoo on the 5th June for our Annual stock judging. Judge on the day was Ann-Marie Manley. The weather was an absolute cracking day and the cows were turned out as if it was a national show so great credit has to go to John and Donal for that.
There was a great turn out of club members and neighbours which was good after the effort the Coppingers made and all enjoyed the day. As with all these events not all agreed with the judges opinion but when she gave her reasons it was valid and all were agreed and quite apart from the odd shout from Padraic Carr.

The Coppingers started milk production in 1968 with 6 Shorthorn cows and in 1972 this changed to British Friesian but they were depopulated in ‘79 and started up milking again in 1980 after buying 25 Holstein Friesians they slowly increased the numbers to todays current herd of 60 cows. Milk is supplied all year round with 35% calved in the autumn to fill a liquid quota and the remaining 65% calving in spring with milk been supplied to Arrabawn. Last years yields were 7200kgs at 3.95%fat & 3.50%pr which is very good considering no TMR is been used only good grass management and high quality silage with meal at milking time only.

With the emergence of son Donal and his keen interest in the Holstein breed not just at home but nation and worldwide he been a winner Galway of the U18 all-Ireland stockjudging in 2013 open day. The herd was graded up in 2012 with the help of Donal Carey, Field Officer and the Cormacoo prefix was established. Some renowned families have been added to their herd since including Fame from the Clonpaddin herd The Fame purchased has classified EX 3rd calver with 6 daughters as a result of a lucky flush and 1 grand-daughter. Other families are the Leslie, Mary, Sasha & Indian Ink from Lisduff the Laurie Sheik from Rosstemple the August from Don Lucey and Janke from Mountfarna and the latest arrival through ET is a grand daughter of the world famous Tri-Day Ashlyn EX96 cow one to surly look out for at the YMA show classes in 2017.

Last year John & Donal tried Triple A breeding and have been very hapy with the resulting calves on the ground bulls been used at the moment are Outlaw,Iceman,Pirlo,Jerudo and Big Malki. The club would like to sincerely thank the Coppinger family on hosting a very successful day and also to all those who helped mark the score sheets and serve tea and refreshmwnts. The Coppingers would like to thank their sponsors Arrabawn for their help. Results are

IHFA Open Day
The IHFA National Open Day on the Windfield herd was a huge success for the Galway club and Screene family. The club would like to say a special thanks to the Screene family for hosting this great event for the club and a big thank you must go to Orla Screene and Jenny Boal and their little helpers for all the food and care we received there on nights after walking cows and other jobs preparing for the day. They truly were amazing and treated us like kings and queens and for this we are very thankful and would do it all over again. We would also like to thank Paul Boal & Clodagh Helen for their patience in training us handlers as we were as inexperienced as the cows but it all payed off on the day as cows, handlers and stewards didn’t put a foot wrong.

It was also great to see how even in a difficult milk price year that there is still demand for quality stock as the sale afterwards was probably the best of the year with a sale top price of €4100 and many others making over €3000 Well done again Tommy&Orly Screene & family.

National Dairy Show
Last up for the year was a trip to Millstreet to the National Dairy Show for some of the clubs members. All in all they were pleased with their return the Boal family with their Keypoint Holsteins had two seconds and a fifth with their calves plus Megan was crowned Res Champion handler for a second year running a really great achievement. Padraic Carr was back in Millstreet after many years absent and had a very respectful 5th with his cow Palmrock Nancy 123 in a strong confined class of cows and Michael Freeney had a 4th & 5th with his Mirah holsteins all and all it was a really enjoyable show.
