Club Notes – Winter 2017
Calf Handling Demo
Our first activity for 2017 was a calf handling demo for our younger members on the 5th of June. The demo was given by Emer Kelly and was held on the farm of Tommy Screene. Emer gave great tips on walking, handling and washing calves. Thank you very much Emer for making the trip down for us, and Tommy Screene for hosting. Many thanks also to Orla Screene and her helpers for tea and refreshments afterwards.
The next event on the club calendar was our herd’s competition. This year the judges were Mervyn Kearney and Graeme Taylor. Thank you both very much for travelling lads and giving up your time to judge our competition.
Club Show, Corrandulla
On June 25th, we had our show in Corrandulla which is also the club qualifier for the YMA finals. The day remained dry for us and everything went off very well. There was a strong entry of 45 dairy animals on show. These animals were turned out to a very high standard, and a credit to the Galway club.
Our judge for the day was Kenneth Boyd of the famous Glaslough herd in Co. Monaghan. Thanks to Kenneth for making the trip and doing a great job. Thanks also to James Trayers of the Renville herd for doing a great job as ring steward.

Our next event brought us to the shores of Lough Corrib and to the Cahergal herd owned by Declan and Kathy Murphy. Tidy roadways, neat paddocks and great cows were the order of the day.
Our master judge for the day was Michael McNamara. Michael travelled up from Limerick for the day, Thank you Michael and family for making the trip and for judging. All 18 cows were a picture and it was hard to put a pin down between the various cows in their classes. The class of senior cows stood out for me and it has to be said that they were as good as any to be found in the country. Michael gave us a breakdown of the reasons and we went back to the yard for tea and refreshments. Thank you very much Kathy and her helpers for the tea, sandwiches, cakes and treats for the kids that were laid on. Results here were:
