Club Notes – Winter 2017
2017 has been another hectic year for Breffni-Oriel Club. Our first event of the year was our club day trip in early May to the farm of Drew and Valerie Mc Connell in Co Tyrone. Club members enjoyed a very detailed tour of the farm and stock as both Drew and Valerie were very forthcoming about their system. The tour then moved on to enjoy a cruise on Lough Erne which everyone found most relaxing and enjoyable before an excellent evening meal on the way home.
Our annual herds competition was next on the agenda and kicked off in July. We were delighted with record numbers of herds entering and all three judges commented on the extremely high standard of stock viewed during the week. The competition was generously sponsored by Lakeland Dairies and the awards night was held in Hotel Kilmore.
The stock judging field evenings were held during the summer also. This year they were hosted by John Givney, Trevor Williamson and Frank Walls. Both stock and farms were presented impeccably and delicious refreshments were provided by the three families, a big thank you to them for their hospitality and work

Our club travelled in numbers to the IHFA open day at Victor Jackson’s Crossnacole herd A great day was had by all and everyone left for home in awe of the fantastic stock.
In October we set sail to the UK for a two day trip to visit the renowned Woodmarsh herd of Mick Gould Griffins robotic farm and Reaseheath College. Everyone was made extremely welcome and thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
Well done to our YMA and all our members who had a tremendous season on the showing circuit winning many prizes at the top national shows.
Congratulations to club members Gerrard Lynch who was Ulster runner up in the FBD Farm Yards Competition and also to Eamon & Patricia McMahon, Co. Monaghan who were finalists in the National Dairy Council Quality Milk Awards.
