Report by Donal Carey

The IHFA YMA National Calf Show took place on July 30th & 31st last in Cillin Hill, Co Kilkenny.  A bumper number of entries were catalogued with YMA members from across the country competing for National honours. Families from across the country descended on Kilkenny city for two days for what is the pinnacle in the YMA calendar of events. Title sponsors of the National Calf Show are FBD, Eurogene AI Services & Volac. David Clarke Livestock sponsored the Clipping competition.   IHFA President John O’ Flynn and his wife Chrissie were in attendance.   Social activities including a Bar-B-Que sponsored by IHFA, bouncy castle and photography demonstration enhanced a family-friendly theme to the Show.

YMA Chairman Brendan Greenan and National Co-Ordinator Andrea Murphy announced the results of the various Calf Show Club competitions in an exciting prelude to the Calf Championship. The winning clubs collected their trophies in recognition of team performance;
Kildare Friesian Breeders YMA Perpetual Trophy for Best Team of Handlers;       Limerick & Clare Club
Breffni Oriel Friesian Breeders YMA Perpetual Trophy for Best Team of Calves;       Slaney Club
Laois Offaly Friesian Breeders Bill Flynn Memorial Trophy for Best Club Stand;      Cork Club
Cork Friesian Breeders Club YMA Perpetual Trophy for Clipping Competition;       Northern Ireland

Judges for the show were Steven Miller (Shanael herd, England) and Erica Rijneveld (Holland). Erica judged the clipping and handling classes on Day one of the show. Erica is renowned throughout Europe for her clipping and showmanship skills. She clips at over 40 shows throughout the year. She is based in Holland from where she manages the company “Livestock Show Equipment”.  Erica praised the high-calibre of the Handlers stating that she was immensely impressed with the YMA’s clipping and handling skill levels. It was a remarkable result for the Neville family, Croagh, Co Limerick with brother & sister Caitriona & Thomas being tapped out as Champion & Reserve Champion Handler respectively. It was an especially proud day for parents Donal & Kathleen and sister Ann as Caitriona and Thomas had earlier won the Senior & Mature Handler classes. As Champion Handler, Caitriona Neville was presented with the Barrett family perpetual trophy for Showmanship. Honourable Mention, Paul Murphy from Banteer, Cork is no stranger to the Championship line up having won Champion Handler at last year’s Calf Show.

Steven Miller from the Shanael herd, Worcestershire, England is a respected judge who has come through the Holstein UK’s Young Breeders. He is the youngest ever member to be listed on Holstein UK’s national Judges Panel. He judged the Showmanship classes at Holstein UK’s HYB National Calf Show 2012. Before tapping out his Championship selection Steve said that it had been a pleasure to have been asked to judge the YMA National Calf Show. He described the calf classes as “tremendous” with “numerous outstanding calves”. He described his Champion calf as a “Tremendous dairy animal with outstanding potential for the future.” Hallow Boss Twain is a Boss Iron daughter from a VG87 Goldwyn daughter of the famed “Eastside S Twain EX 96” from the dispersed Galwaybay herd. The Twain family has bred many show winners. Indeed the Champion Calf at last year’s Calf Show “Beechrow Atwood Twain”, is also bred from this family. Reserve Champion went to Pat Gaynor’s “Swiftsheath Windbrook Mia” who the judge praised for her dairyness and overall balance. She is a “Gillette Windbrook” daughter from” Ballythomas Adolph Mia EX 94”. Paul & Margurite Flanagan’s “Tubbertoby Chip Anna” took Honourable Mention having earlier won its Summer Yearling Class. She is sired by “Mr Chassity Gold Chip ET” out of “Desmond Shottle Anna EX90”.

YMA members are grateful to parents, family members for their support in participation at the National Calf Show and other activities throughout the year.
 A warm thanks to both our judges and to ring stewards Maria Burke, John Moroney, John Curtin, John O’ Sullivan and to Richard Hamilton.I wish to acknowledge and thank the local Carlow Kilkenny club for their help in setting up the venue and ensuring the show was a success.  Thanks to Denis Barrett for a thorough job as MC. I wish to thank sponsors FBD, Eurogene AI services, Volac and their representatives. I would like to thank C.E. Charles Gallagher and the IHFA office staff.   Sincere thanks and credit to the National YMA Committee, YMA Chairman Brendan Greenan and Co-Ordinator Andrea Murphy for their tireless work in the preparation and planning of the show and their commitment over both days.
