Emerald Expo 2017 – Launch
Saturday 29th of April, 2017
Virginia Show Centre, Co. Cavan
The Emerald Expo is now one of the great landmark shows on the annual agricultural Calendar incorporating All-Ireland of Dairy breeds, the first show of the year, hosted by the Virginia Showgrounds in their impressive new development. The date of late April will hopefully be conducive to a good turnout of both stock and exhibitors at the Show where we look forward to the Spring workload on farms being under control.
Emerald Expo 2017 is a leading All-Ireland Dairy Event organised by a committee of local breeders from the wider catchment area, chaired by Mr Richard Whelan, Chairman of the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA). Now in its seventh year the Emerald Expo continues to play a major role in attempting to fill the void in place since the RDS Spring show was discontinued. The famed RDS Spring Show was a real highlight in the past as breeders exhibited their cattle breeding wares at the famed Ballsbridge venue. Indeed the hallowed lawns of the RDS was the shop window for the breed over the decades as trends in cattle breeding could emerge, the show was the visual display of new genetics adopted by the breeders.
This All Breeds Dairy show has a significant prize fund with 20 classes and six Championships up for grabs. There are also Handling classes for the Young Members, these are the keen, next generation of future breeders. This will be the first show to gain points in the Showmanship League 2017. The Showmanship League continues throughout the Summer, traversing the many local shows throughout the country who host the competition. Qualifying points towards the Final at the National Dairy Show, Millstreet are accumulated along the way with points awarded from 1st through to 6th place. Emerald Expo is the first qualifying show for the Showmanship League this year, with the story to conclude in October at the National Dairy Show. The popularity of this competition goes from strength to strength.

The Supreme Championship is a prestigious title and all eyes will be on this prize. The judge will certainly earn his crust on the busy day’s Judging!
Shows play a very important role in rural Ireland as an educational tool and a fun day out for farming families This “social capital” is a key ingredient and serves as a link between town and country. It serves as an important outlet for farmers to meet up and discuss, taking time out from a busy schedule, while enjoying the spectacle of the show.
A number of key partners/organisations are involved in making this show possible and without their help and input the Show could not be the success that it is. The support, commitment and dedication of Irish breeders to this show over the years is to be commended. The committee behind this new development with tremendous facilities on the Virginia Showgrounds are to be acknowledged and thanked. Cavan County Council have also provided support to the Show in bringing extra activity into the area. Pat and Mary Gaynor are once-again to the fore in their support of the Emerald Expo taking place in Virginia. The Show could not take place without the tremendous support and generosity of key sponsors; Alltech have been associated with Emerald Expo since its inception, we commend Kevin Tuck and the team based near Dunboyne for their committment. FBD, Glanbia, Volac have been great supporters and have backed the Show throughout. We are grateful for the continued support and backing of the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine. The farm organisations have been solid in their backing and maintain a strong connection. The AI companies and milking technology companies are also to be commended and thanked.
The sponsors of the show demonstrate strong commitment year on year with many having an association from the very first show. Long may their support and generosity continue. Your dedication in staying with the show is greatly appreciated and we offer our sincere thanks.
